Fly
Started fly fishing: I've fished as long as I can remember...back
in the day, tackle was heavy and clumsy. I slowly morphed into
lighter and lighter spin gear until about ten years ago I started
to hear about saltwater application of fly gear…I was HOOKED!
It's the simplicity.
Best day: In the first two weeks of August, we had an
awesome bluefin tuna window about 18 miles out of Manhattan (45
minutes). One early morning, we got out to Ambrose Tower - choppy
water, 2 to 3 footers - it didn't look good. Two hours later,
the sun was out and the water turned to glass. Out of nowhere,
skip jacks and blue fin tuna were bustin' everywhere! If we weren't
busy enough battling the torpedoes, 15-pound (plus!) Mahi break
in to the mix (jumping for max air). The bait was so thick, it
was scattering at the bow of the boat. Sea turtles and big rays
- lots of life.
Finally, completely spent, we headed back to the marina with fresh
sushi and had the local restaurant prep it. It was awesome. Heading
up to my apartment on the upper west side, I was riding the subway,
listening to the usual conversations and complaints about work
from my fellow strap hangers, and I'm thinking, "They have no
idea how cool my office is."
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: Chatham, Cape
Cod
Ideal trip of a lifetime: Anything that involves saltwater,
fly gear, pelagic fish...and a fast boat.
