Started fly fishing: For years as a kid, I’d fished a
ton of lakes and rivers in the Sierras of Northern California
(using everything from worms and flashers to spinners and spoons).
Twenty fish days were becoming more common than not. Fun times
for sure, but I needed to step up my game. One day (in about 1990),
a buddy of mine schooled me (ridiculously out-fished me…size and
numbers). He was casting his four weight fly rod. He was using
this fly he tied. And the smile on his face was a bit bigger than
mine. It didn’t take long for the fly rod to be my new weapon.
And I haven’t looked back since.
Best day: I’ve had a few that have left me feeling pretty
good about myself. One takes the cake though. A few years ago,
some buddies and I set out for the Yuba River in search of a bit
of a slabacious hat trick (to land three different types of trout…resident
rainbow, brown trout and steelhead). Knowing we’d have to cover
some water to pull it off, we hit it early. After twelve hours
of casting, three completely different sections of river fished
(lower, mid and North forks), and a shoulder that could have been
bronzed, I dominated our little competition. I was lucky enough
to fool four steelhead (six to ten pounds), six browns (15 to
22 inches) and more scrappy rainbows that I could count. It was
ridiculous. To this day I still day dream about that slabfest.
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: I’ve been
lucky enough to visit a silly amount of lakes, rivers and saltwater
across North America. I’ve been spooled by Steelies on the Smith,
Kings on the Sacramento and Striper in the Delta. The fact is
though, that I still can’t get enough of the Alpine lakes in the
Gold Lake Basin of the Northern Sierras. The fish aren’t huge,
but the views and history of this place are unbelievable. And
casting a bugger to brook and rainbow trout in the heart of 49er
gold country is about as cool as it gets.
The standout "trick" perfected to catch more fish:
By no means have I perfected anything (yet). I have, however, been experimenting a bit with the knots I use to tie on my fly. For sub surface flies, I’ve been tying a bit of a loop knot to the eye of my wet flies. It adds a wacky wiggle to it that seems to get fish more interested.
Ideal trip of a lifetime: I’m a big fan of top water assaults
on my fly. I also wouldn’t mind going to a place that’s about
as secluded as it gets. So I’m hoping my next big trip will have
me in the Rio Negro basin of Brazil slaying Peacock Bass. From
what I’ve been told, they are as grumpy as they come. And, there
is nothing small about them.
