Started fly fishing: I grew up in the Northwest, surrounded
by friends and family who all hunted and fished, so I got an early
introduction. When I landed my first steelhead on the fly, I was
hooked for life.
Best day: I took a trip to the Salmon River in Idaho a
couple years back. I was swinging flies, throwing indicators and
sometimes not even paying attention and fish were hammering everything.
It was a day to remember for sure.
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: I'm lucky
because I live in a very fish-friendly area. My favorite spot
right now is the Elk River area over the border in Canada (southwest
Alberta). The brown, bull, westslope cutthroat and rainbow trout
are thick up there.
The standout "trick" perfected to catch more fish:
I've been told that using an indicator is "cheating."
I say that using a grenade is cheating. Using a fly rod is already
a challenge. When I first started throwing an indicator, I actually
got fewer hookups. I noticed that my fly was dragging upstream
(behind the indicator). Knowing the concept was supposed to be
a dead drift, I started to stop my upstream cast abruptly (by
pinching my line). I'd do this just before the end of the cast
(when the fly rolls over). The result would "pop" my
fly back towards me and downstream from the indicator. It turns
out this gets my fly in the zone quicker, makes for a more natural
drift and gets me more takes - that works for me.
Ideal trip of a lifetime: Argentina for sure. I took two
years of Spanish in college and want to use it to convince some
of those submarine browns to come out and play. Que pasa?
