Name: Matt O'Connor
City: Boulder, CO
Occupation: Climbing Walls for the People
Started fly fishing: My brothers Mike and Brion and I
went on a guided trip in September, 2002 with a legend - Buzz
Cox - of the High Lonesome Lodge in western Colorado. Great food
and greater fishing. It was all over after that...
Best day: Wow. There have been a few. The most eye-opening
was floating the Grey Reef with the Sensei, Casey Sheahan, in
the original Pig Sticker. I'd never caught fish that big on big
beautiful water. Having the Steelhead CEO tell me I had skills
was like Michael Jordan telling me I could throw it down. Other
than that, any day with my buddies Mikey, Sully, H-bomb, B2, P-Touch,
and Sensei - anywhere. Watching the wife land her first Roaring
Fork Brown on Christmas was pretty cool, too.
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: I would have
to say South Boulder Creek above Eldorado Canyon. I learned patience,
technique and respect there. Not the biggest fish, but beautiful
as well as tough and feisty. On top of it all, it's a beautiful
place.
Trip of a lifetime: Fly fishing is like bouldering for
me. It's usually about the people. If all of my buddies (mentioned
above) get together and none of us get skunked, consider me happy.
Now, if we could all get together in New Zealand - that would
be pretty special. Fish one day, boulder the next...24 ounce cans
of PBR around the fire - consider me done and done.
