Occupation: Attorney
Started fly fishing: I started fly fishing when I was
studying for the bar exam and sublet half of a two bedroom apartment.
The other sublettor was Charles Gauvin (later to become President
of TU). He took me to various rivers in the Rangley Lakes region,
loaned me equipment and got me hooked. The only thing he didn't
have for me was waders. I did a lot of wet wading that summer.
I did more fishing than studying, so I failed the exam the first
time around, but passed the next time…a small price to pay for
a life-long passion. Thanks Charles!
Best day: My best day of fishing was below Reudi Dam on
the Frying Pan River in Basalt, CO. I hooked a real pig of a rainbow
on a tiny mysis shrimp pattern. When I realized I would have to
follow the fish, I climbed up the bank and followed the stream
side road. Then my reel fell off my rod. I got it back on and,
unbelievably, still had the fish on. Just before I got to a spot
where there were trees between the road and the river, I saw the
fish roll on its side. I started to scramble down to the water,
getting my net out.
At the same time, another angler (who had been watching the battle)
was approaching to get a better look at my prize. I started to
pull my camera out and asked him to take a picture. This was premature,
as the fish spit the fly back at me and swam off. If I told you
the fish was more than 25" you'd probably call me a liar... but
I'm not. (At least not this time.) I never got the name of the
only witness, so you'll have to take my word for it... or not.
Even though I lost the fish, the battle was so exciting, I was
breathless and had a sh*t eating grin on my face all the way back
to my hotel. Truly the best fish I ever didn't catch.
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: This is a
tough one. There are so many beautiful spots here in Maine. Sure,
the Frying Pan is a great river, but for beauty alone, I'd have
to pick a pretty little stream on Mt. Desert Island near Bar Harbor,
Maine. There's this beautiful plunge pool below a pair of 5-6
foot falls. It's a short hike, and when I get there, I can't help
but just sit and soak it in for a while before I wet a line. The
biggest fish I've ever caught there was 7-8" bejeweled brookie
- as pretty as the spot it came from.
Trip of a lifetime: A weeklong trip with my buddy, Mike,
to a remote river in Labrador would probably be my dream trip.
I'd just love to catch nine-pound brook trout on dry flies. I
think brookies are the prettiest trout there is, and a big one
would be magnificent.
