Tim Ridings - Eel Hunter Extraordinaire
|
Name: Timothy Ridings
City: Bozeman , MT
Occupation: Textile Importer
Started fly fishing: I fell in love in 1996 on the South Platte River, just above a private camp in the IceBox and Family Hole. My great friend Paul Robertson told me if I could learn to nymph fish here in this gin-clear pool full of finicky rainbows, then I could fish anywhere. Moving water with scenic views and those elusive beautiful fish keep me coming back for more. He reminded me that if I had to hike out of that canyon to the truck skunked, it was still a great day (and he was right).
Best day: Father's Day with my most cherished fishing partner, my Dad, on the San Juan River. I knew it was going to be a great day when I hooked and landed two giant torpedo rainbows before even shoving off. The best was watching my Father catch his first trout on a fly rod. High canyon walls, eagles soaring above, a few clouds made for dynamic fishing conditions. We had a polite and patient guide. An excellent streamside lunch. High-fivin' each other all day long. PURE FUN.
Favorite lake, river, or salt fishing spot: The pond full of trout in my neighborhood in the Four Corners area outside Bozeman - in which my three-year and seven-year old catch rainbows unassisted (to Dad's utter enjoyment).
Trip of a lifetime: My father, my son and I on a triple hook-up - landing giant trout, steelhead and salmon in a remote area of Alaska. A slight breeze to keep the insects down, a few clouds to keep the conditions favorable. Humble guides, rustic cabins, great food and drink and a comfortable bed to greet us each evening. Three generations of fly fishermen enjoying what it's all about.
